Assign315 2
From MariachiWiki
Thanks for an exciting session. The assignments due by next week, September 18 are:
- Finish your personal wiki page to include a brief bio (your background and interests why you took the course), a picture (yours or another image), and a working internal and a working external link.
- Upload the excel data file from your calibration measurements. Make plots in the file (remember to save to your computer and relaod to the wiki!!) of the efficiency (triples divided by doubles) ve voltage, and the singles rate of the test counter vs voltage. Pick a suggested operating point and briefly justify it.
- I uploaded the image of our notes from the first brainstorming session here.
I apologize for the scrawl and I will try to improve my smartboard skills. My transcription is as follows:
- 1 Cosmic ray rate vs transparency (smog, humidity, clouds, etc) of the atmosphere.
- 2 Velocity of cosmic rays
- 3 Rate vs Direction (up vs down, left vs right)
- 4 Classification (what are they, how many of each kind, different kinds?)
- 5 Interference
- Change in rate vs ?
- Interference
- Refraction
- Shielding - Metals, Earth, Atmosphere, Building
- Change in rate vs ?
These are a great starting point for our explorations. Before next time I would like you to try to quantify what numbers we might measure to establish some of these phenomena. You can start from the simplest - what do we mean by "rate"? If we take the simplest setup - 2 counters in coincidence (why?) - what happens as we change the oreientation of these counters and their separation, and their - I hope you get the idea....take it and run!
