Brainstorm-a-rama
Thank you for an excellent brainstorming session. You all have so many great ideas. In class, you narrowed these ideas down to four plausible experiments that you will do using the equipment in the lab. Now you have to design these experiments. On the wiki, each of you must contribute substantive information to the design of each experiment. The wiki tracks all contributions to the pages so we’ll know who did what (you can find out too). As evidenced by your personal pages, you are all creative geniuses. So be creative! Text, pictures, and diagrams are only a few of the things that these pages might include. Each page should be written as a proposal with every detail spelled out. Because this is a collaborative effort and the end product should be a cohesive one, it is essential that you do not wait until Thursday afternoon to get started. You will use these pages as your guide to completing the experiments. So the better they are, the easier your life will be in the next few weeks!
Your chosen investigations are:
1. What is the speed of a cosmic ray?
Procedure (due Thursday 3/7/2006 3:50PM)
2. What is the effect of different materials on cosmic rays?
Procedure (due Sunday 3/10/2006 11:59PM)
3. What direction do cosmic rays come from?
Procedure (due Tuesday 3/12/2006 3:50PM)
4. Do cosmic rays have simultaneous coincidences?
Procedure (due Tuesday 3/12/2006 3:50PM)
For Thursday:
Part A
You need to collaborate with your peers on developing the procedure to your first experiment; Determining the speed of a cosmic ray. As you decided, both groups will be attempting to determine the speed of cosmic ray particles. Your lab assistants (Nathan and Rich) will help you with setting up the equipment in the lab provided you leave them instructions in your procedure (they will check for your instructions and set up the lab for you before you come in). All of your work should be posted to the Procedure link above.
Part B
Don't forget your blog entry. Blog entry number two should be posted to your personal page for Thursday. Remember to include a lightbulb and a challenge moment.
