Introduction
The detection and energy determination of cosmic rays on the surface of earth is accomplished by detecting the particles and photons created by their interaction with the atmosphere. Over many years, many different techniques to detect cosmic rays were implemented.

Mixed Technology
The "state-of-the-art" experiment searching for UHECR is the Pierre Auger Observatory in Argentina. Auger uses a combination of a water Cerenkov ground array (1600 tanks of 3000 gallons each separated by 1.5km) with fluorescence detectors.
