My name is Mildred Yvette Faison. I'm enrolled in the Undergraduate Teacher Certification Program, and I'm double majoring in Italian and Spanish at Stony Brook University. There are some that say language learning is an ability one is born with, but I strongly believe language is a combination of skills and ability. Language learning doesn't have to be difficult and a hassle: with a little encouragement and enthusiasm from a teacher-in addition to simpathy when needed-students can learn and master a second language.

A good part of my language skills was acquired here at Stony Brook University. In addition to Spanish and Italian, I took French and Arabic-which was equally interesting and demanding. To my surprise and dismay the Arabic language doesn't use our number system or alphabetical characters, and I thought of God, what have I gotten myself into? About a month and a half before the semester was over, I put more effort into the course and started using the audio more often. Once I did that, the language became a bit clearer for me, and I started to pick up the vocabulary better. I love language learning, and hopefully later one I'll learn other languages including Russian, Portuguese and expand the limited knowledge I have of French and Arabic. One of the reasons why I'm taking this Physics 315 course because it fulfills the second natural science requirement that I need for graduation. When I saw this course-last semester-in the list courses, I made some calls, did a little reading and decided that this course would be very interesting-especially the research aspect of it-which was what drew my attention above all of the other science courses on the list: I love to do research. I don't have time for special hobbies and interests during the school semester: I'm dedicated to my studies, and when I'm not in school or at home studying, I work. But I do go on vacation at least once a year: most of the time to Orlando Florida. I've been to Disney several times, and the only park I don't like is the Magic Kingdom: that is the one with the castle and the princess; this park is something small children can enjoy better. I look forward to my vacations away from the every day routine and scenery. I like to rest on my vacation also: I don't like to be constantly on the go-when I go away-without taking the time to relax: it is a vacation after all; it is supposed to be a break from work. During my vacation last month, I watched the History channel, Weather Channel, A&E and the news. And I became interested in what these channels have to offer because it is history, which I love. While I was watching the news I kept up with some of the politics, which also interested me. So now during the school semesters while I'm reading, studying or preparing for a presentation I can watch these channels and the news and keep up with what happens now and then. And of course my knowledge continues to grow.
