Lesson 2-February 5, 2008.
From MariachiWiki
lesson 2-February 5, 2008. The focus of this lesson was to experiment with the detectors to find out how efficient they are. How "efficient" are the detectors? What is the rate of Cosmic Rays? How many Cosmic Rays pass by the detector? How are they detected?
coincidences tell us how it counts cosmic rays. If it goes to the bottom detector, chances are it is a cosmic ray. coincidences is another word for cosmic rays hit. Detector 1 was pre-set at 5.77 Detector 2 was pre-set at 6.10 Detector 3 was pre-set at 6.95. We tested the efficiency for 60 seconds and initially set the volt at 5.001v. Starting from the first measurement until the 5th one, the charge changed the number of volts entered on its own, and once measured it changed again.
Example, 5.7v was entered, and the charger changed it to 5.699v;
5.6v was entered, and the charger changed it to 5.595v.
During the first few testings we kept all three detectors in the same position: one on top of the other-in a horizontal angle. At some point we changed the position of the 3rd detector-which was the one in the center-on several occasions. Once we did this, the efficiency of detection of cosmic rays-for all three detectors-changed.
After the first set of testings, we increased the amount of testings and lowered the time to 20 seconds' increments. Finally we tested in increments of 10 seconds and tested the efficiency of 10 times.
