Lightning Information

Background

By:Josh Seidman

Lightning is an eletrical phenomenom, and one of the many magnificent occurrences that are produced by the planet earth. Recently, scientists have shown a growing interest in the relationship between Cosmic Ray and Lightning activity.

MARIACHI is currently using two methods to measure lightning and its relationship with cosmic rays. The first method is the use of various Radar stations around BNL. In this part of the experiment, radio waves are bounced off the ionization cloud that forms following a lightning strike. The second method involves the use of an electrometer which measures the changes that occur in the electric field around BNL during a thunderstorm (for additional information on MARIACHI's electrometer and the progress that MARIACHI is making visit the Electrometer Enhancement page).
