CERN HST Program
Rich Gearns and Mahyar Nikpour are currently attending a High School Teacher's program. The program is taking place in Switzerland at the CERN laboratory from July 1-21, and is called the CERN HST program.
During the first few days of the program, the participants learned about the ATLAS experiment and very basic cosmology. By the end of the first week, the teachers had underwent lectures on particle physics. Following these lectures, the participants were broken up into groups and together they built cloud chambers to observe the passage of these particles. The week concluded with a lecture on the applications of particle physics in terms of medicine.
At the start of the second week the teachers were divided into three groups. For parts of the next two days the groups alternated between stations that dealt with accelerators, cosmology, and particle detection.
The teachers were also divided into several working groups where each group focused on an individual component of the overall program. Additionally, a lecture was given on A History of Scientific Ideas, and the author of the novel Engines of Discovery gave a presentation of his work. The book focused on the development of particle accelerators from the invention of electrostatic accelerators, linear accelerators and the cyclotron to the colliders of today.
Week two of the program ended with some lectures and works involving the study of antimatter and LHC physics.
The final week consisted of a few lectures on astroparticle physics and a large amount of group work. At the conclusion of the project each of the work groups were to give a presentation to the rest of the participants on the research and findings on their topics.
Helio in Brazil
The classic pop corn experiment.
Helio Takai spent the week of July 1-8 in Brazil at a teacher's workshop, which was a gathering of physics teachers from the stat of Paraiba. The event was hosted by Prof Mauro Kyotoku from the Universidade Federal da Paraiba.
The workshop consisted various hands on experiments, such as the flashing LED experiment that was devised by the MARIACHIs and the pop corn experiment.
Additionally, the participants built a SPIDA-2 antennae and then tested it to see if the device could accurately detect meteors. Lastly, several lectures were given on the MARIACHI project and the DRACON experiment currently being built at Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro.

Fermilab
Tom Tomaszewski and David Lewine are participating in a summer workshop at Fermilab. The Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory began on November 21, 1967 and is located in Batavia, Illinois. Fermilab's mission is to develop a better understanding of the fundamental nature of matter and energy.
The group of individuals selected to participate in the week-long workshop were there to continue with the study of cosmic rays. Teachers raised their skill with cosmic ray detectors and analysis tools available in a web-based e-Lab. These tools allow teachers and students of the
QuarkNet Collaboration to look for cosmic ray showers, measure flux variation, and determine the quality of data taken by a worldwide network of student detectors.
Additionally, the participants were able to greatly improve their knowledge and ability of constructing the detector arrays that are currently being stationed and operated by various high schools across Long Island.
Marge Bardeen, QuarkNet spokesperson, commented, "It is a pleasure to collaborate with
exceptional teachers like Tom Tomaszewski. Teachers find coming to Fermilab an extraordinary
opportunity to explore an outstanding research facility, interact with world-renown physics and
master teachers, and learn to engage their students in 21st century science."
Prague
- Rich Gearns and Jeff Spahn will be attending a teacher's workshop in Prague during the month of August.
