Introduction

Put possible research ideas here. This is a brainstorming page, so all ideas (really good as well as not really possible) are valid. Note that while ideas are usually simple, answers to ideas are often difficult.

Cosmic Ray

  1. Are there certain areas of the sky where there are more showers?
  2. Is there any periodicity in the cosmic rays? (e.g., over 24 hours or over a year)
  3. Does cosmic ray flux depend on what part of the sky is visible?
  4. How do the relative rates of low energy showers (single hits), moderate energy showers (double hits), and high energy showers (triple and quadruple hits) compare? Does an increase in one correspond to an increase in the others?
  5. Can we correlate detector size to shower energy? If so, can we use the different sizes of the detectors in the schools to compare the rates at different energies?
  6. Are there long distance shower coincidences?
  7. Is there chaotic behavior on the arrival time of showers?

Cosmic Ray showers and their interaction with the atmosphere

  1. Pixelgram of Cloud coverage to study the relation between clouds and cosmic rays
  1. Solar power output correlation with cosmic ray flux.
  2. Does the relative humidity affect the number of showers.
  3. Does the barometric pressure affect the number of showers.
  4. Does the cosmic ray flux increase or decrease during times of high solar activity
  5. Is cosmic ray flux related to aurora brilliance?
  6. How does solar weather affect cosmic ray rates at different energies?
  7. Does cosmic ray flux depend on local terrestrial magnetic field?
  8. What are scientists debating over in the cosmic ray-cloud proposition that is causing the theory to be accepted by some scientists and not be accepted by other scientists? What has been some of the data collected and experiments conducted that have been leading to this? -Peter Ramirez (P.S. could you post the answers to my questions on my wiki page because I couldn't make it today- THANKS!!!)
  9. What would, or potentially could, be some of the most influential parts of the weather on cosmic rays that could be experimented with and would be the most beneficial and useful for MARIACHI and on the study of cosmic rays?- Peter Ramirez

Cosmic Ray and Lightning

  1. Can we record exactly the time of lightning occurrence?
  2. Can we determine the exact location of lightning bolts? By triangulation?
  3. Can we differentiate between different kinds of lightning - intra-cloud, cloud-to-ground, etc.?
  4. Can we measure the time duration of individual lightning bolts?
  5. Is the number of detected cosmic rays affected by the presence of lightning?
  6. Is the energy distribution of the cosmic ray shower, as detected at ground level, affected by the presence of lightning?
  7. Do cosmic rays influence lightning production?
  8. Does lightning occur immediately after a cosmic ray event?
  9. Does lightning occur more often during cosmic ray showers?
  10. During a series of cosmic ray events, does lightning occur in larger number but smaller intensity and/or duration, or smaller number but larger intensity and/or duration?
  11. What effect on lightning can we measure and attribute to cosmic rays?
  12. Is there a difference in the number or frequency of different types of lightning (intracloud, cloud to ground, ground to cloud) during a shower of cosmic rays?

Radar

  1. Can Radar data be analyzed using an algorithm to automatically find meteor events? (Isaac Degani)
  2. Very Low Frequency antenna to detect lightning and meteors
  3. Visual detection of meteors and lightning
  4. Infrasound detection of lightning and meteors.
  5. Does meteor echo duration depend on atmospheric conditions?
  6. Are there difference between daytime and nightime meteors?
  7. Can we observe meteor showers?
  8. Does meteor signal shape depend on time of the year? (Glenn and Hochan)

Cloud Chamber related
