The Half Hollow Hills High School Research Class visited the Mariachi Lab
March 7th 2008
A research and AP C Physics class from Half Hollow Hills West visited the Mariachi Lab. We were happy to welcome them with their student teacher Mr. Brian Thalhamer, who worked with Mariachi during the summer of 2007, and their regular teacher Mr. Bartolotta.
After an introduction to Cosmic Rays from Dr. Marx and an introduction to Mariachi scintillator detectors from Dr. Dima Vavilov, the class divided into groups and did a set of experiments. Here are their plots:
Mish's data
Lindsay's data
David's data
Dan's data
Dennis' data
Students inferred theories from their results and presented these theories with support by their data in a peer-oriented setting, as scientists do. Overall, visiting the Mariachi Lab was a great experience that gave students a chance to get a feeling of how scientists do research. Hopefully it also made them realize that there is still many physical phenomena that we don't fully understand yet, as might be the impression students get in the classroom.
