Cosmic Rays Strike Riverhead High School Students

After an introduction-demonstration to particle detectors including the electical pulses they produce and a computer Data Acquisition system, students had a chance to put their hands on our equipment themselves. How to measure the performance of a comsmic particle detector ? How to choose the correct operating voltage for it ? How to create "coincidences" between detectors to separate noise counts from real particle signals? Why does a detector still count simultaneous events with other two detectors although they are separated by quite a big distance (the answer was first discovered by Pierre Auger in 1938) ?
