Experimental Setup
This experiment investigates the fluorescence of Olive Oil when irradiated with green laser. For the experiment we placed samples (different oils) in a small test tube. The test tube was held by the arrangement on the left hand side. A paper cup was cut to be a test tube holder. There are two windows in the holder. One that lets the laser through (left to right), and another window that is used to take the picture. In the opposite side of the camera window we placed black electrical tape for higher contrast. The setup was created by Tom Tomaszewski. The camera is placed as close as possible to the test tube and in this case just sitting on a table. The test tube holder was place on top of magazines for height adjustment. The camera was set to have the exact same exposure for all the pictures. A camera with manual adjustment would give better images.
For the images we collected the camera was set to ISO 200 sensitivity and Artificial Light white balance. Pictures were taken with 1/15 s shutter speed and an f-stop of 3.2.
We used a total of 9 different oils for data collection and water as a reference. The laser pointer used is for astronomy demonstrations but any other will do.
