Remote access to the computers

Getting to a remote desktop

Currently one of our computers can be accessed remotely using the standard Windows XP Remote Desktop progam (should be a part of standard distribution accesible by Start->Programs->Accessories->Communication->Remote Desktop). You will need the following information to login:

  • Computer to connect to: sb-kopio5.physics.sunysb.edu
  • User: wise07
  • password: will be distributed privately

Disconnecting

Use the "Start" button in your Remote Desktop window. You should see "Disconnect" button in the place where "ShutDown" button usually is. Use the "Disconnect" button to end your session. DO NOT use the "LogOff" button for that - this will terminate all programs that were running during your session. On the other hand using "Disconnect" allows you just to leave the remote computer without affecting any program. For example, you can start a program, then disconnect, then an hour later connect again and see your results.

Moving Files

You can make your disks to be seen by the remote computer. This way you can move files to them. You do that by choosing the corresponding option of the remote desktop program before making a connection: click the "Option" button, choose "Local Resources" tab, check in "Disk drives" under "Local devices". Connect as usual. You should see at least one (might be more) additional net drive(s) on the remote computer: C on YourComputerName. Drag and Drop to this drive or any of its subdirectories to copy files to your computer.

Possible Problems

Only one person can use the computer at a time no matter whether locally or remotely. What happens if somebody else accesses a computer (e.g. remotely when somebody is logged in locally or vise versa) is that he/she kicks out its current user without a warning.

So if you have just logged in remotely and see the Data Acquisition program collecting data - you probably kicked somebody off the computer. Disconnect and try another time.

If you work with a computer remotely and suddenly get disconnected - probably somebody else has just logged in to the computer. Wait a little bit and then connect again. Hopefully your program will still be running and everything else is in the same order.
