Dr. Bynum founded LIGASE in 1995 to improve science education opportunities at all levels. He has received numerous awards for his work, including most recently the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Faculty Service and the President’s Award for Excellence in Diversity & Affirmative Action. Dr. Bynum's national honors include the American Society for Cell Biology Bruce Alberts Award for Outstanding Contributions to Science Education and the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring. His accomplishments at Stony Brook include receiving over 11 M $ in external funding, the development of nine new hands-on undergraduate and graduate biology courses, the remodeling and equipping of six new laboratories for science education, the creation of a masters degree in biology teaching program that is the largest graduate education program on campus, and the creation of partnerships between Stony Brook, high schools and community colleges.

Professor Bynum is among only 10 individuals nationwide to receive the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring. Professor Bynum was honored, along with six organizations, for "achieving remarkable results in increasing the participation of minorities, women, and disabled students in science, mathematics and engineering."
