I am an Astronomer at Suffolk County Community College, and teach several courses on... Astronomy! I came to the USA from Great Britain about 7 years ago, seeking Fortune and Glory [I am still seeking!].
My research interests include: Optical Morphology of SNR's and HII Regions [University of Hertfordshire - UK], Spectropolarimetry of AGN's [University of Hertfordshire and Warwick University - UK], Cosmology and the WMAP project [Princeton University - USA], and of course Meteor’s and Cosmic Rays [SCCC]. As you see, I am not one who merely repeats my PhD research ad nauseum.
I became an astronomer due to the fact that I was an amateur astronomer to start with, and liked the subject so much that I decided to pursue my hobby as a career [there not being a UK space program at the time, or even now – I also wanted to be an astronaut]. So I did!
However, I am also very passionate about the promotion of astronomy and science in general, and, given an opportunity will speak/talk/lecture to anyone who I can corner/trap/ambush.
To this end I travel and talk at clubs, schools, societies, etc., etc.. I have also written astronomy articles for various magazines, and have had several books published.
Details pertaining to this, and even more, can be found on my website http://http://web.mac.com/mdiastro/ By the way, the image above is of the Anglo-Australian Telescope dome in Siding Spring, where I did some work on AGN's. The tiny figure lounging nonchalantly on the rail is me
