Jessica Newman
Jessica is an Undergraduate Mechanical Engineering Major at Stony Brook University. She started her work with the MARIACHI Experiment in the Summer of 2005 at Brookhaven National Lab. She had the privilege of a Summer Fellowship from Battelle sponsored by WISE (Women in Science and Engineering.) Her intership position has been carried through the fall and the current spring semester.
Her primary role was to help develop and build new antennas for the reception of radio waves reflected from atmospheric ionization. She is the designer and creator of Spida. SPIDA, Simple Prototype Inverted Dipole Antenna, is the first of many antenna variations for the experiment. Currently, a log periodic antenna is in the works as an alternate instrument.
Jessica's artistic talents have also played a role in the experiment. Aside from the orignial hand-drawn models for the antennas, she also helped construct "Cosmo", the Cosmic Ray Retriever and faithful companion to Cosmic Chris.

Jessica Newman
Last summer, junior Jessica Newman made her mark on Zambia. While still a freshman in the WISE program, she received a Battelle Fellowship to work at Brookhaven National Lab with physicist Dr. Helio Takai and his team, building an antenna to be used for high energy cosmic ray research. The antenna she designed—made largely of recycled PVC tubing, scrap wood, and pieces of broken antenna—cost only $3.50 to build and tested out so well that it is now being used as a prototype in Zambia. “It’s amazing what they throw out in the garbage at BNL,” says the Mechanical Engineering major, who found most of her building materials in the basement and storage room of her lab. A component of the MARIACHI (Mixed Apparatus for Radar Investigation of Cosmic-rays of High Ionization) Project at BNL, the antenna receives reflected radio signals from ionization clouds in the sky that are largely caused by meteors or cosmic rays. Jessica’s design improved upon a version used in the Netherlands that consisted of two crossed dipoles arranged at 90 degrees to one another to eliminate a zone directly above the equipment that was blind to incoming data. Her solution, devised after discussion with Dr. Takai, was also a double crossed-dipole structure that was also economical, weather-resistant, and simple to build. “My mentor was so cool,” says Jessica. “He had a new idea, and he asked if I was interested in continuing the work and using a different type of antenna. This project combined three areas I love—math, art, and physics,”
In her freshman year, as part of her WISE “Introduction to Research” course with Dr. John Noe, faculty member in the Department of Physics and Astronomy and Executive Director of the Laser Teaching Center, Jessica did research involving art forms created with the help of polarized light. The project showcased her love of art and design along with science. Like this year’s antenna project, her earlier research was presented at the annual URECA celebration. This summer, Jessica has an internship at EDO Corporation, an Amityville engineering firm that designs and manufactures aeronautical defense components, such as bomb racks for fighter jets. “This will definitely be a whole new experience for me,” Jessica says. “As much as I love BNL, I needed to do something more connected to my major.” Her goals are still hazy, but she hopes in some way ultimately to connect all her main interests into something creative and satisfying. “I would love to work for NASA and to be involved in the space program,” she muses. “On the other hand, maybe I’ll be an art director or set designer. I really don’t know.”

Stony Brook Motorsports
Jessica is also the Director of Marketing for the Stony Brook Motorsports Team at Stony BRook Univeristy. Every year a talented group of students combine their diversified knowledge to design and construct an off-road vehicle. At the end of the academic year, they take this vehicle to an International Competition hosted by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). The organization provides a wonderful opportunity for students of all academic disciplines.

- Where am I now?
For the summer 2006 I will be working as an intern for a local engineering firm called EDO Corporation in Amityville, NY [1]. EDO is an aeronautical defense systems company that works with Aerodyne, Grumman, Boeing and the Navy, Marines, etc. I will be exposed to all levels of engineering, to hopefully determine which aspect of engineering is right for me. More to come as things unfold!

The "Aerosmith Chick"
While many may not remember her name right away, there is always one aspect about her that seems to stand out in memory. Jessica has been an Aerosmith fan for the majority of her life. It has been incorporated into almost all aspects of her life, including her artwork. (See Above.) She has attended everyshow in the New York area in the past 5 years and nver misses a beat in the latest AeroNews. As a fan, she loves their music. But their incredible talent goes further as it permeates into their personalities. Their charitable means and pure souls have inspired Jessica on many levels. Their incredible story of rock n roll hardships and the battle with drug addication has inspired her to strive further. It has shown her that anything is possible with patience, diligence and determination. Here are some quotes of wisdom from Mr. Steven Tyler:
- "Anything worth doing, is worth over doing."
- "Remember, the light at the end of the tunnel may be you."
- "Those who wait get what's left over from those who got their first."
To learn more about Aerosmith read "The Autobiography of Aerosmith" by Stephen Davis.
Above all, Jessica hopes to meet this wonderful groups of talented musicians. She has created a special, one of kind piece of artwork as a gift. The legacy behind this artwork has taken her out of state in an attempt to make her dreams of meeting the band a reality. It was a hard lesson learned about trust and power. For photos see the "Art Gallery" above. She hopes to one day "hand-deliver" this special gift in a demonstration to thank the group for all that they have provided for her over the years. Until that day, "Dream until your dreams come true."
