Josh Seidman
High School
Josh is currently in his sophomore year at Stony Brook University. He is majoring in both physics and journalism at the university.
Josh attended Mepham High School where he was first introduced to Helio, MARIACHI, and physics by the physics teacher at the school, Bill Leacock. Together Josh and Bill successfully installed a set of cosmic ray detectors at the school. At present, the detector assembly at Mepham High School is taking data from the four installed scintillator panels and we are working on connecting the system for automatic uploading to the Mariachi server.
Throughout Josh's junior and senior years at Mepham, he was mentored by Bill on his science research project which focused on trying to find a relationship between Cosmic Rays and lightning strokes. Josh spent three summers at Brookhaven working with Helio where they studied the relationship between the two phenomena. He was named an Intel Semi-Finalist, a first for Quarknet, for his research on this topic.
Scientific Long Islander
During the 2007 summer, Josh constructed a website dedicated to the promotion of scientific education on Long Island. The site is called Scientific Long Islander (SLI).
SLI is a website dedicated to the promotion of science on Long Island. There are dozens of scientific institutions scattered all across the island that many people are unaware of. There are museums, observatories, universities, and even a government-run national laboratory. There is science everywhere, but many people are uncertain of what's going on and where to find it. Therefore, the goal of this website is to accumulate as much information as possible relating to these institutions and their scientific endeavors, and then spread this information to the general public.
For more information on SLI click here.
