Kevin Mernick
Kevin Mernick is a PhD student in Electrical Engineering at Stony Brook. His research interests are in signal processing, Monte Carlo methods, and complex systems. He is working with Dr. Monica F. Bugallo, Dr. Petar M. Djuric, and Dr. Helio Takai on the MARIACHI Radar project.
Kevin received his Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics from Brown University in 2001. While at Brown, he was a Teaching Assistant in the Department of Mathematics for MA019 (Multivariable and Vector Calculus for Physics and Engineering students). Kevin was also elected to Tau Beta Pi (the Engineering Honor Society) and Sigma Xi (the Scientific Research Society).
From 2001 to 2007, he was a Design Engineer with Bay Computer Associates in Providence, RI. Kevin worked on commercial, industrial, scientific, and medical electronics and embedded systems software applications including an automated external defibrillator trainer, a wearable electrocardiogram, a research defibrillator, a research sonar array system, a tablet personal computer, a multimedia display kiosk, a global positioning system, and a fax/modem. He was also lead electronics and software engineer on teams of 2 to 6 engineers for applications including a power-assisted wheelchair, an athletic ability standardized testing system and a handheld spectrometer.
At Stony Brook, Kevin was a Teaching Assistant for ESE380, Embedded Microprocessor Systems Design, during the Fall 2007 semester. He worked as a Research Assistant with the Energy Science and Technology Department at Brookhaven National Laboratory from October 2007 to April 2008. During this time, he collaborated on a project to develop an automated FMEA (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis) tool for the digital feedwater control system (DFWCS) of a nuclear power plant. He wrote software to simulate the operation of the DFWCS under various failure conditions and to quantify the probabilities of failure sequences based on a Markov model of component failure modes. Kevin has worked as a Research Assistant on the MARIACHI project since May 2008.
