Summer Science Session

Mariachi Summer Workshop 2008

Few fun facts. I'm here for the whole summer through the Simons Fellowship. I was selected from my school to perform research at Stony Brook University. So I'll be in the basement all summer, from 9~5. Every day, until August 15th. On top of that, I'm taking classes during the evening. For the first half of the summer, I will be taking an Intensive German class and during the second half I will be taking a Mechanical Engineering course.

Being in the physics building from 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.? Fun..

July 7, 2008. First Day

I'm back! Although I didn't type much stuff for almost a year, I felt obliged to update my wiki page.

First, a quick introduction by the head of the Physics&Astronomy Department. After that, a quick food break. Helio with his dancing hamsters gave a quick overview of the MARIACHI Program.

Helio's 'hilarious' jokes were followed by yet another food break, and then we got to play with Tablet PCs.

I was not at MARIACHI today in the morning because I was getting a tour of Brookhaven National Lab! That was fun. After looking at hundreds of miles of cables, I was ready to dive back into work. Only if that wees so easy. In The afternoon, I saw a demo of the radars, and with my group, determined the optimal frequency of the radars... or something. We calculated something and made a graph of it.

July 9, 2008

Today was data analysis day for the Cosmic Ray Group. We:

  • Gathered data from various schools such as Smithtown, Bayshore, Sachem, Suffolk, and Shoreham.
  • Organized the data from April 10~April 27, and from May 2~May 13.
  • Found the relationship between Pressure and Cosmic Ray Coincidences
  • Ate Lunch
  • Graphed a line of best fit to describe the relationship
  • Found the equation of the line of best fit
  • Found the trend line, and the residual (Actual coincidence-the trend)
  • Graphed the residual data.

The goal of this analysis was to see if there is a relationship between solar flares and cosmic ray coincidences.

Before we could finish the analysis, the entire group was unhappy about the immense amount of data they had to analyze, and tensions were often high. Helio played the role of peacekeeper before things escalted.

Thank goodness, it was time to go home, and further conflict was avoided.

Last day!

Conclusion

So...things were fun during the workshop! I wasn't isolated by myself in a cold, windowless basement all day. I was with people in a cold, windowless basement all day instead. (Heh heh).

So....I got 23 work days to go before I get some time off to myself. Ahh...so close yet so far away...
