Amanda E. Stewart

My name is Amanda Stewart and I am a freshman at Stony Brook University. I am a member of WISE (Women in Science and Engineering) and am majoring in Biology. I am probably one of few people majoring in Biology without being pre-med as well. I am actually hoping to get my PhD and continue my education to become a zoologist or possibly a veterinarian. I want to dedicate my life to animals, because ever since childhood I've wanted to help animals and work with them day to day. I am taking WISE 187 and am currently in my second rotation called the Basic Processing of Radio Signals.

I live in a suburb of Albany, New York called Latham. I attended Shaker High School and graduated in 2007 with an Advanced Regents Diploma with Honors and a Liberal Arts Diploma with Honors. I was also inducted to the National Honor Society during my senior year. I chose Stony Brook University because it has great research opportunities and because I was accepted into the WISE program.

My father, who is a Lt. Colonel in the NY Army National Guard, has just been deployed to Afghanistan, which has a profound affect on me. I am very proud of him. I live with my stepmother currently because of my father's departure, and we are very close. My mother resides in Maryland and I enjoy going to visit her every couple of months.

One of my favorite activities is volleyball. I was captain of my school's Varsity volleyball team and I am addicted to the sport. My other hobbies include paintball, hacky sack, video games, reading, and just hanging out with my friends from both home and school. I also enjoy watching TV and movies. My favorite show is CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and I am a dedicated fan of the NFL and the Baltimore Ravens.

Today I had to catch up on what I had missed in the two previous sessions. First I was learned how to use the program called WinRadio which is used to detect radio waves. I was able to manipulate the clarity and band width of radio signals using this program, which also altered the quality of the sound. We then were shown a Powerpoint presentation on Matlab and it's general uses and functions. Some terms we learned were vector and array (row vector).

We started using Matlab today and did some exercises with using the symbols and functions available on the program. We created matrices and signals that we could be manipulate, plotte, listene to, etc. We also learned how this all pertains to the research being done in the lab.

We learned about the following functions in Matlab today:

wavwrite(writeSignal,frequency,wavFileName)

sound(sample Signal, frequency)

wavread(wavFileName)

randn(N,M)

We also listened to some signals using Matlab.

Today we made several different plots of noise and signals using different sounds that we made or found off the computer. The following are my plots:

Today we started working on our final project. Our first task of five was as follows:

Task 1. Time Plots Choose one file from the folder, plot 4 graphs as follows. (a) signal power (in dB) vs. time (b) signal power (not in dB) vs. time (c) estimated noise power (in dB) vs. time (d) estimated noise power (not in dB) vs. time

This took us the entire class and we had the following plots: Image:Signal dB.jpgImage:Noise dB.jpgImage:Signal watt.jpgImage:Noise watt.jpg

We finished the last four tasks of the final project in Matlab. We compared thresholds and used detection indicators the corresponded to the signals. Then, we counted the number of events presented by the indicators. Third, we plotted the events versus the time per day, which was referred to a diurnal pattern. And lastly, we analyzed the distribution of events and their durations. We had to use the following code in Matlab as well:

hh = 1 if hh-1 < 10 hhstr = strcat('0',num2str(hh-1)); else hhstr = num2str(hh-1); end txtname = strcat('T071215',hhstr,'.dat'); ¯d = fopen(txtname); D = textscan(¯d,'%s%s%f%f'); Noise = Cf1,4g; Signal = Cf1,3g;
