Notes from April 15

Idea 1: rate versus altitude using Cosmic Chris

Idea 2: rate versus angle, orientation wrt ground, must have at least 2 detectors, better to separate detectors to better determine angle

Idea 3: rate versus angle, orientation wrt compass,

Idea 4: rate versus distance between detectors,

Idea 5: time versus distance between detectors, velocity of particles?

Idea 6: rate versus "fold" ie, number of detectors required for coincidence

Notes from April 17

Dr. Vavilov discussed the ideas of accuracy, precision and the Standard Error of the Mean

There are lots of online descriptions of this concept but many are very technical (here's one I (RSL) thought was accessible Handbook of Biology Statistics.

In short, we will use \sqrt{N}/N as the fractional Standard Error of the Mean, where N is the number of counts in the measurement. So, to achieve a precision of "10% error" we need to make a measurement with at least 100 counts (0.10=\sqrt{100}/100)

We'll use this value to assign error bars in our graphs A discussion of how to add error bars in Excel
